The Yolo Community Band returns for their annual opening night festivities at the Yolo County Fair on Wednesday Aug 15, 2018, 6-7 p.m. with a free concert in front of the West Stage near the Spring Lake Schoolhouse. The band will perform patriotic favorites and popular movie theme selections, including Star Wars marches, themes from Pirates of the Caribbean and Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.- Adventures on Earth, a Mary Poppins medley, America the Beautiful, Armed Forces Salute and an exciting arrangement Ruckus.
The Yolo Community Band was founded in 2005 by music director and band leader Bobby Rogers, a Woodland native who heads the music department at Pioneer High School in Woodland. The 60 member band includes musicians from communities across Yolo County as well as from Sacramento and the Bay Area. The band plays six or seven concerts annually and is under the sponsorship of YoloArts. In June 2017, The Community Band performed in Carnegie Hall in the ‘New York Sounds of Summer International Music Festival’. The band is planning a tour through Italy for summer 2020, a great opportunity with concert performances in city squares, historical venues and performing with local Italian community bands.
With this being the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW I, the band returns with a patriotic concert in front of the old Yolo County Court House at 725 Court Street. The performance is on Sunday November 11th on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the exact time the Armistice was signed. The annual event is put on by the American Legion Yolo Post 77 and coordinated by Legion Past Commander Vince Olvera. Current Commander is Martin Prado.
Local musicians from middle school age through senior citizens are welcome to join the band for the 2018-2019 season. They rehearse on Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Pioneer High School band room.
