The Yolo Community Band and The River City Concert Band Spring Concert

The Yolo Community Band directed by Bobby Rogers will host the Rancho Cordova River City Concert Band with conductor Tom Seaton for a combined concert on Monday May 14 at 7:00 p.m. This family friendly event will feature contemporary concert band arrangements across a wide musical spectrum. The free concert will take place in the Pioneer High School Theater at 1400 Pioneer Ave in Woodland. There is also free parking.
The Rancho Cordova River City Concert Band began in 1990, and will be celebrating its 28th anniversary and the 15th anniversary under current conductor Tom Seaton. The band began its association with the city of Rancho Cordova as an ambassador for the arts in 2012. Their program will feature an arrangement of ‘Malagueña, ‘Highlights from Harry Potter’, ‘The Penny-Whistle Song’ by Leroy Anderson (featuring the flute section), ‘Cumberland Falls’, ‘Queen’s Park Melody’ a variety of other selections.

The Yolo Community Band was founded in 2005 by music director and band leader Bobby Rogers. Rogers, a Woodland native, currently serves as the head of the music department at Pioneer High School in Woodland. He also conducts the Santa Rosa Youth Symphony and is an adjunct professor for the jazz program at Solano Community College. YoloArts is the fiscal sponsor of the Yolo Community Yolo Community Band. Their program includes ‘Machu Picchu: City in the Sky’, ‘October’ by Whitacre, ‘Tempered Steel’, ‘Red Line Tango’, and the spirited and percussive ‘Ruckus’ by Randall D. Standridge.

Community bands provide a way for musicians and the local community to maintain a life-long interest in performance and appreciation of concert band music. Yolo Community Band includes about 60 members that range in age from high school students to senior citizens and come from Arbuckle, Davis, Woodland, Dixon, Elk Grove, Zamora, Rumsey, Winters, Esparto, Yuba City, Sacramento, and the Bay Area. In June 2017, Yolo Community Band was invited to New York City to participate in the New York Sounds of Summer International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall. The band is planning a performance tour in Italy for summer 2020. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Pioneer High School band room. If you would like to join or find out more about the group, contact director Rogers at Robert.Rogers@wjusd.org.
