A group exhibition of artists from Woodland’s Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer (TANA) silkscreen studio will open on August 3 at YoloArts’ Gallery 625 in Woodland. The Art of Response: TANA Posters in Action represents timely and powerful responses to social and political issues past and present. The exhibition runs through August 31.
Exhibition artists include Elyse Doyle-Martinez, Jose Quintero, Sean Guerra, Olivia Hernandez, Higinio Herrera, Eddie Lampkin, Maggie O Lickter, Vincent Ortiz, Roberto Paniagua, Gilda Posada, Maria Victoria Rojas, and Angelica Sauceda.
While Doyle-Martinez and Quintero are featured artists in the exhibition, all of the artists are high school or UC Davis students, or are local artists, community members, and UC Davis student interns who mentor workshop participants.
“Elyse is a relative newcomer to TANA and Jose has worked with TANA for a number of years as both a participant and intern guiding workshops. Elyse has put in the time to develop her creative voice and both artists are dedicated to their craft and developing their own their artistic visions,” said Jose Arenas, Associate Director, TANA.
Located at 1224 Lemen Avenue in Woodland, TANA operates a silkscreen studio, exhibition space, and teaching center for the arts. It is a collaboration of the Chicana/o Studies Program at UC Davis, and the greater Woodland community. Many TANA participants are Woodland high school and UC Davis students, and some are community artists. The center is free and open to the public.
The opening reception, hosted by YoloArts’ board member Sara Pereida, will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 3, during the downtown Woodland First Friday Art Walk. Music will be provided by DJ Eddie Salas. Throughout the evening TANA studio artists will demonstrate the printmaking process and there will be an opportunity for the public to try a hand at printmaking. Refreshments, including wine and beer, will be available. A members’ preview and artist talk is scheduled from 5-6 p.m.
