Italia Bella Photographs of Italy

Italia Bella is a two-man exhibition featuring the professional photography of Michael Dunlavey and Donald Satterlee. The show opens June 7 at YoloArts’ Gallery 625 in Woodland.

This unique exhibition explores the beauty and romance of Italy through two different, complementary lenses. One artist uses the natural filter of warm, sunny days; the other winter’s cold and fog.

Since retiring as president and creative director of the Dunlavey Studio in Sacramento, Dunlavey has rediscovered a passion for Italy – capturing the power and magnificence of ancient buildings, the contours of century old vineyards, or the landscapes of Tuscany, Chianti, and Umbria.

“Searching for something new to shoot on early morning walks energizes all my senses and makes me feel alive,” Dunlavey said in a statement released for this show.

Satterlee spent his professional career as a commercial advertising photographer for decades and produced many of the images seen in ads, brochures, annual reports, and billboards around northern California. In 2008, Satterlee started a personal project titled “Fogscapes” as a way of expressing a longtime passion for black and white scenic photography.

“Shooting photos on a drizzly foggy morning is a very peaceful and ethereal experience. It is my hope that viewing the images conveys that peace and calm,’ Satterlee said in the show’s artist statement.

Acquainted with each other for forty years, Satterlee and Dunlavey worked together at Dunlavey Design Studio, where Satterlee would take part in editorial and advertising photo shoots.

The artists will be attending the opening reception, 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, June 7, coinciding with the downtown Woodland First Friday Art Walk, and hosted by YoloArts board member, Lanette McClure. Guitarist Doug Brewer will be playing an eclectic mix of soft country rock, blues, and light jazz. An artist talk begins at 6:30 p.m. An exhibition preview for YoloArts’ members will be held from 5-6 p.m.

Gallery 625 hosts exhibitions and receptions every other month. New exhibitions open on the First Fridays of February, April, June, August, October, and December.

Italia Bella  continues at Gallery 625 through July 30.
