Other Worlds an Exhibit at Gallery 625 in August

Gallery 625 will be hosting Other Worlds, featuring artwork from members of Third Space Artist Collective in Davis. Artists Douglas Kleinsmith and Heidi Roodvoets will be exhibiting their work. Third Space Art Collective is a group of artists, performers, and educators working to enrich the community through the creation and exhibition of art and music accessible to all. The exhibition runs August 3 – 29, with a meet the artists reception, 5:30-8 p.m. on August 4. Musicians Jord Nelsen and Will Durkee, also Third Space Artist Collective members, will be performing at the opening reception.

Kleinsmith and Roodvoets are both recent graduates of UC Davis. According to his artist bio, Kleinsmith explores process artwork, investigating trans-humanism, visual perception, and the connection between the creative process and consciousness. He examines the connection between conscious and unconscious decisions, utilizing and examining the interplay between the two to create visual imagery, and as a means to explore the self through its own filter, attempting to help others do the same.

According to her artist bio, Roodvoets is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, photography, video, and printmaking. Much of her work involves organic materials, bodily forms and a confessionary art style.
Her sculptures often reference bodily aging, life, death, and humor. Roodvoets uses different media to express different ideas such as creating videos and photographic works such as printmaking to create more playful expressions. Her goal is to communicate when words alone are not enough and considers it an achievement when the viewer can have “…an emotional, cathartic experience by looking at, and experiencing her work.”

The opening reception will feature Jord Nelsen playing his unique instrument “Jordello” accompanied by fellow Third Spacer, Will Durkee who will play a homemade electric bass/guitar. The duo is expected to play new music and improvise at the opening reception for Other Worlds.
