Butterflies are free

Pioneer Elementary School student Emily Cotter, look at the new ceramic totems in the school garden Monday afternoon. Students at Pioneer and friends of the late Dorothy Peterson, a veteran teacher who was a great supporter of school gardens, gathered for the dedication of the three ceramic totems in the garden that is named in Peterson’s honor. The totems, which depict different phases of the life cycle of butterflies — including crawling caterpillars and fluttering butterflies visiting flowers — were created by ceramic artist Linda Fitz Gibbon and Pioneer sixth-graders. The art project was the culmination of a six-week ceramic class arranged through the YoloArts program, funded by the Yocha Dehe Community Fund.
