We had hotter weather in the region on our last visit to the tomato fields at Rominger Brothers Farms in Winters, but that didn’t deter artists from venturing off to visit the three different sites. Our visit this month was coordinated by Stacy Wear from the Yolo Land Trust who connected us to our host, Bruce Rominger. Thanks, Stacy & Bruce!
Guests had many engaging perspectives to choose from; open vistas accompanied each individual site. Vast, expansive landscapes accompanied by the morning light—what could make for a better session?
Our base site was accessible from all sides, our second site provided views of rolling hillsides, and the third offered some shade and a slough area. We hope the visit was productive and engaging. Thank you to everyone who attended!
Art & Ag visited Rominger Brothers for the Almond Bloom back in 2022, and even earlier in the program’s history, 2009 (who has work from this visit?!). This time, we headed there for tomato row crop heaven! A sprawling property in the foothills of the Coast Range that has been in the Rominger family for five generations.
During our visit we were allowed access to THREE tomato fields nestled along the foothills in Winters. Tomato Field 1 ran along a canal & a safflower field. Down the road from the first field, Tomato Field 2 was closest to hills and the ideal spot for artists to start their visit. They also had the option to take a short drive to check out Tomato Field 3 lined with walnuts, and crop rows that ran north/south.
Our hosts and stewards of the land, Rick and Bruce Rominger, are committed to protecting the environment. In the last 20 years, they installed more than 7 miles of field-border hedgerows and riparian corridor enhancements with native plants including foothill pine, deer grass, bay tree, red bud. “We wanted to get a lot of diversity in the corridor" says Rick.
To further preserve their family legacy of farming, the Rominger’s and Yolo Land Trust are currently working to complete a conservation easement on 479 acres of their farmland in Winters.
It was great to see you on the Farm!
